My review is for the summer course - not the full time - the school is big on "self learning" but whatever interpretation of this "progressive learning" they have is completely distorted. I taught myself how to program computers, etc, but hoped that this school would help avoid the many of the frustrations that come with that… so let me tell you what happened. The recording class. We’re just sitting in booth for most of the class time, recording random sounds. I understand that it’s important to practice with the tools - but isn't that what the allocated free time is for? My feeling was, the instruction time should have actual instruction. Recording samples, cropping them, arranging them, and applying effects would have been a solid 4 hour class - but somehow, it became four weeks. I raised these complaints with the instructor, and got into this bizarre conversation like “music can be anything,” which is arguable. I explained how Ableton’s own music production course breaks down the fundamental concepts in a very clear way. The teacher responds, “oh they have a course? That’s great you should do it!” It made my wonder what I paid for.. The synthesizer class For the entirety of the classes, we are again sitting in booths, pressing on random buttons. One time we had a class exercise, where we set up a synth deck, and all rotated from one device to another… just randomly turning knobs. One of the synthesizers wasn’t even working… but who could even tell? It was like one of those fake DJ performances. In the final class, I asked the instructor, “oh, are we just turning knobs again?” He replied, “well, yes, that’s how I learned.” I pushed, how about explaining what the actual concepts are, how these sequencers work, what the pitches are, etc, but he didn’t have much to say. I told him I’m going to go home, and he was like, okay. Some students rationalized this by saying that we are paying to access this requirement.. but in literally every class I’ve had, there was some gadget that didn’t work. It would have been better to equip students with some OP1s rather than these discarded junk synthesizers. ——— The Ableton class The Ableton class is where most of the teaching happens - but it’s just random bits of knowledge here and there, can’t say it was very useful in aggregate. Just looking on YouTube and online courses, they have a clearer strategy to get someone productive and are a much better value for the time spent. Probably, a more interesting approach would have been to take the class through the construction of an actual song. This class might have been worth it for the memory of this conversation: "I won't explain what a compressor is - that's X job. When is your class with him?" Yesterday "Did he explain it?" Uhh...... ——— The social environment Overall, I would say that Catalyst does not have good community management skills, if any at all. I liked everyone I've encountered as artists, but as course/community organizers and teachers, you can see the skill is just not there. For this kind of place, that’s especially important as you’re dealing with a lot of young people and strong personalities. I got to meet some of the other summer course students, and overall, they shared the sentiments. It’s similar complaints as myself - disorganized materials, not enough instruction, “go practice”, “check YouTube”, etc. Student selection needs to improve as well - we had professional musicians, people who can produce electronic music, beginners, etc, all in one class and they struggled to cater to any specific group. ——— I can go on for much longer - this is just surface stuff - but overall, I would say Catalyst needs to hire some people that actually know how to teach and run a class - and to be more considerate of the student time. People are coming from distant parts of the world and spending a bomb on this experience. There’s a lot of logistics to manage, like renting a place in July. Overall, I found it to be a major let-down.

Despite being the in the first degree program at dbs Berlin, and the humble campus we had in comparison today, I cannot say anything negative about this institution. The degree program was aimed at students seeking a complete education preparing us for our final year’s thesis. Each subject was taught from simple to more complex, and understandably there may be some with more experience than others, but reinforcing the basics is essential. The support I got from all tutors was excellent and inspired passion to learn and grow. Following the degree, I was able to work as a freelancer, delivering high quality work to a variety of clients. Despite not currently working in music, what I learned socially and in soft skills over the degree years still sticks with me and certainly supports my current work and interactions in my industry.

Programme with great value! I signed up for dBs Film certificate last year and I can honestly say this is a great programme for people that want to get a jumpstart on film-making. Before I came to dBs, I had little to none technical knowledge about film-making and I didn’t know where to start on my own. I didn’t know where I could assemble a crew to film a passion project and I didn't know where I could source film equipment. dBs created a space for me to hone my craft and provided feedback for every project I made . The tutors are open to new suggestions and they are dedicated in helping you improve. If you sign up for this course, make sure you use the resources offered, ask the tutor for advice, assemble a crew amongst your peers and make films! My year at dBs was insightful and nothing short of phenomenal.

I came here unsure of what I wanted from this experience. They give you all the tools and freedom to make your own path. I really flourished in this environment and was able to develope the beginning of what is so far a successful career in soundtrack music. If you're motivated here you will make something of yourself and dbs still helps me a year after graduation.

dBs was the perfect size for me - people get to know each other with the slightest effort. The staff were very qualified, helpful, and approachable, despite the fact that many of them were, in fact, English ;) I earned there some tools I use daily ever since, and made connections that go with me to this day. The program is what you make of it - the more you engage, the more you’ll learn.
